ENSURING LONGEVITY OF YOUR BUILDING THROUGH FAÇADE DESIGN

09:00 AM - 09:30 AM KEYNOTE SESSION: Adaptive façade design and delivery: Let the context be your guide

Abdulmajid Karanouh, Head of Innovation Design, Façades & Sustainability, Ramboll
The Gulf region is experiencing a rise in demand for higher-performing and energy-efficient building designs, whilst aspiring for iconic stature. This presentation offers innovative techniques to develop and deliver creative yet context-considerate and cost-effective building envelopes with exclusive regional insights into:
  • Al Bahr Towers – Abu Dhabi: Winner of Innovation Award 2012 by CTBUH for its energy-efficient design and for its outstanding dynamic façade that adapts to the movement of the sun
  • SRG Tower – Dubai: Not only will the SRG tower be tallest residential tower in the world (under construction), it will also have one of the most energy-efficient façades in Dubai
  • Downtown Dubai Hotel: The building has a highlyefficient and optimised façade design that offers a highly complex dynamic look whilst using a costeffective standardised repetitive shading element

As architects design the façade of skyscrapers it is essential to understand that KSA and Bahrain have a very different climate compared to other cities like New York and Tokyo. Acknowledging mistakes and strategies used can be helpful from other cities but no other city has the same conditions than the given city. This session discusses ecological and climate conditions specific to the region and the façade materials and strategies that should be considered to design a sustainable façade.

10:00 AM - 10:45 AM Networking break out sessions

This networking break out session allows you to interact
with industry experts in the region and discuss key façade design and engineering challenges and solutions to build faster, smarter and more sustainable buildings.
Delegates will have a few minutes to move round the conference room and engage in discussions with industry experts. Engagingwith professionals one on one and experiencing similar challengesmeans that you are more likely to walk away with the rightsolutions. These discussions also mean that you will have more time to ask burning questions and get the answers you need.

10:45 AM - 11:15 AM Smart high-performing façades: Ensuring project excellence through material selection, design and orientation

Loay Ghazaleh, Undersecretary Advisor, Bahrain Ministry of Works
  • Façade systems and LEED low-energy buildings and renovation
  • Accounting for wind loads and peculiar façade designs in construction
  • Sustainability and fire safety in façades systems
  • Future innovations and technologies in façade systems

Is the future of heavily glazed façades coming to an end? Glass façades are associated with increased energy consumption, solar heat gain, glare, high maintenance, discomfort of occupants, and cost. This session will debate whether glass façades should remain a popular trend in KSA and Bahrain as well as discussing innovative smart glass technology and using glass alongside more sustainable materials.

THE HOT TOPIC: PREVENTING AN INFERNO

00:45 AM - 1:15 PM Safety first: Developing a fire-proof façade strategy for your building

Benjamin Beer, Technical Director, Meinhardt Façade Technology
With buildings in the Middle East catching fire, the safety of skyscrapers has been questioned by many. It is important for architects in Bahrain and KSA to develop an understanding of how material selection and orientation of façades can affect fire performance. This session will discuss how to reduce the risk of fire spread and fire leap through façade design and identify materials that are not going to propagate fire.

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM Lunch and networking

2:15 PM - 2:45 PM Its not straight forward: Complex façade geometry

Complex façades are becoming more popular with architects who are looking to differentiate their buildings and make a statement.
Complex geometry façades require a different design approach than traditional façade designs. This session will delve into the challenges faced when designing complex façades and how to overcome this with project case study examples

2:45 PM - 3:30 PM Networking break out sessions

This panel discussion will discuss what façades will look like within the next 5 years. With the increase in sustainability and fire safety this panel discussion will predict how this will change façade design and engineering as well as discussing future innovations and technologies.
