22 March 2009

09.00 - 15:00 Masterclass A : Performance specification of building envelopes

Design of modern building envelopes are attempting to match the new requirements for energy efficiency and sustainability with the traditional requirements of weathering, structural integrity and safety. Complex design solutions are evolving for which performance specification and testing is the only practical route to procurement.

During this Masterclass you will walk through the steps of selecting a façade solution, specifying performance, testing the integrity of the design and ensuring appropriate quality and appearance of the completed building envelope. Examples of good specification practice will be presented in the context of international standards.

You will have the opportunity to discuss how specification and testing can be integrated into the procurement process.

Benefits:

  • Understand why particular envelope solutions are adopted
  • Examine the implications for specification and construction in each case
  • Discuss why, what and when to test
  • Explore how to ensure compliance with the specification
  • Know how to specify for appearance and quality

Workshop leader

Dr Stephen Ledbetter CEng FICE FSFE
Director
Centre for Window and Cladding Technology, UK

Stephen has over twenty years’ experience of building envelopes of all types. He is Director of the industry-funded Centre for Window and Cladding Technology supported by over 300 companies and based at the University of Bath in the UK . Stephen has been widely involved in the writing of standards and specifications and other guidance documents for industry. He lectures extensively on courses pertaining to all parts of the construction industry and is Course Director for the MSc. in Façade Engineering at the University of Bath. Stephen has led international study groups and has chaired the International Conference on Building Envelope Systems and Technology.

25 March 2009

09.00 - 15:00 Masterclass B :Integration of early modeling within the design stage

The design of masterplans and buildings need to respond to complex issues, integrated team working and knowledge base at the earliest point of conception. The workshop seeks to show how integrating environmental models, testing and BIM models can help arrive at practical and viable solutions.

Benefits:

  • Understand the use of modeling to help determine the façade type
  • Examine the interaction and the importance of communication within the wider design team
  • Optimising every stage of the design by adopting an integrated approach
  • Understanding the importance of sustainable design, energy, materials and innovation

Workshop leaders:

Kevin Leahy
Board Director
Broadway Malyan Ltd
Ian Walker
Head of Environmental Engineering
Broadway Malyan Ltd

Kevin Leahy has many years of experience over a large range of projects and has worked extensively with Ian Walker and with many authorities during the formation period of new energy policies such as UK revised part L regulations, the need for modeling and advanced computational methods to provide practical solutions. Ian Walker is an Environmental Engineer; he works closely with the architectural teams and external consultants to optimise, test and offer design solutions from an energy point of view - from concept level to energy assessments and certification.
